Required tools:

  • A flat file
  • A wooden block
  • Steel wire brush
  • Goggles
  • Hand gloves

Now, it’s time to sharpen the mower blade except separating them from the mower. Follow the step by step process to complete the entire task conveniently.

Steps to follow:

Step #1: Preparation For Sharpening Mower Blade

Take your lawnmower into an even surface or in your garage. Remove the spark plug of the mower. This will help you to avoid all sorts of issues related to accidental starting in the time of working.

Step #2: Seal The Gas Tank

Remove the lid of the gas tank. Place a plastic bag over the mouth of the gas tank and replace the lid in its previous position.

Step #3: Tilt The Lawn Mower

Now tilt the lawnmower into it’s sideways to access the blade. But make sure that the mower’s fuel tank, as well as the carburetor, is in the upper portion when you tilt the mower.

Place a wooden block diagonally at the other side of the lawnmower to make the mower more stable. Don’t forget to do that because it’s an inevitable step when you sharpen the blade without separating them from the mower.

Step #4: Place A Wooden Block Diagonally Under The Mower Blade

Take another piece of a wooden block and place it diagonally under the blades to prevent the movement of the blade. And after placing the wooden block, make sure that the blade won’t move in any direction.

Step #5: Clean The Blade

Clean the blade with a steel wire brush to remove rust and dirt from the surface of the blade. Clean the beneath of the mower deck also if you see any grass clippings or dirt.

Step #6: Sharpen The Lawn Mower Blade

Now, it’s time to regain the older strength of the blades. Take a flat-file and place it over the cutting edge of the blade.

Always start the sharpening process from the center of the blade and try to maintain a proper angle. After properly sharpening one side, switch to another side of the blade to complete the sharpening process.

Step #7: Lower The Mower and Unseal The Fuel Tank

When you complete the sharpening process, lower the mower. Reopen the mower fuel tank lid, remove the plastic bag and replace the lid again.

Now your mower is completely ready for cutting the grasses efficiently.

Tips

  • Try to sharp the blade when the mower gas tank is completely vacant.
  • Inspect the blade after every mowing to know the condition of the blade.
  • If the blade is completely damaged, then replace the blade with a new one.
