Although best known for its electric snow blowers, Snow Joe has diversified to develop a lightweight and cordless electric lawn mower: the Sun Joe iON16LM. Cut the grass into efficient 16-inch strips so that the garden does not become too long.

The mower’s battery can last up to 40 minutes, depending on the length of your lawn and the load on the engine. The best electric mowers have batteries that last up to an hour. However, the Sun Joe’s is perfect for lawns less than or equal to one-quarter of a mile and is regularly maintained.

Ease of use

The SunJoe cordless lawn mower has some features that I really liked and made it easier to use.

In the middle of the mower is a stable lifting handle, with which the entire mower can be easily absorbed. This is a decisive advantage during transport, storage or for extra maneuverability when cutting.

The cutting height can be adjusted easily with the 6-position cutting height adjustment lever. It attaches well to the side of the mower and moves the cutting height from a minimum of 1.18 inches to a maximum of 3.15 inches (according to SunJoe).

While it’s tempting to grab and lift the mower deck (instead of the handle), do not do it! Never place your fingers near the cutting blades.

Thanks to the multi-position quick release wheels on the mower deck, the handle height can be easily adjusted for operators of almost any size.

The mower will start easily by pressing the safety lock button and pulling on the selector rod (yoke) until it touches the foam-coated handle. The security lock is hard to ignore: it’s the big green button on the side of the right grip.

The upper and lower bars are made of steel and not plastic and the handle is covered with pleasant foam.

Battery

The highly visible battery compartment in the center of the mower has a clear plastic cover which is raised 90 degrees to access the 40V 4Ah battery.

The battery compartment is activated by a spring, which makes it easier to install and remove the battery. To insert, simply push the battery into the bottom of the compartment until the battery pressure latch clicks into place and the battery clicks into place.

To remove the battery, slide the battery into the battery compartment (feel the spring pressure) and press the battery pressure latch until the battery is pushed up beyond the lock position.

Two good security features are the locking button that holds the battery cover securely to the battery compartment and the safety key that needs to be plugged in after the battery is inserted (the mower will not work without it). The security key can be inserted in any direction.

One feature I would like to see on the SunJoe lawn mower is the ability to check the battery level without having to open the battery compartment lid to press the battery indicator button.

Motor

The SunJoe 16LM cordless mower uses a brushless motor that offers some advantages over a typical brush motor, such as B. higher efficiency, higher reliability, lower noise, and longer life.

Brushless motors also tend to have a higher torque-to-weight ratio, which means you can achieve superior performance with a lighter mower.

Good cutting performance

The SunJoe radio mower cuts clean and comfortable on both fine and coarse grass. I tried it at different altitudes and even on wet grass, all with very good results.

The grass catcher has mesh sides and a hard bottom, making it sturdy, foldable and easy to stow away. By using the grass bag, the grass was virtually free of grass waste.

The grass catcher display window (a flap on the top of the grass bag) makes it easy to see when the bag is full: the flap is flat when the bag needs to be emptied. However, it is a bit weak, so I’m not sure how long it will stay connected to the mower.

Safety

The Sun Joe iON16LM lifeline stops your engine immediately after takeoff, but the most valuable safety measures are almost always those that also prevent accidental starting, especially when young, intrepid and curious explorers find a new toy in “discovering” the garage, if not Adult is an insight to prevent a checkup. To start this mower, the safety key must be inserted in the slot provided to close the circuit. Even then, it will not be activated if the pre-start button has not been pressed.

The SunJoe lawn mower is relatively quiet (below 100 dB), but I still recommend the use of hearing protection and the usual protective equipment when using lawn tools (goggles, long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves). ,

However,this is an electrical device and should not be used in humid climates or in very wet lawn conditions, as there is a risk of unpleasant electric shock.

Is it worth it to buy?

Since the mowers move without mulch, I liked the device. It was light, easy to handle, had a decent running time, was extremely agile and made a clean and comfortable cut. I found the height-adjustable handles, the sash window and the springs in the battery compartment, which made the removal of the battery particularly easy, a real plus. It was compact, light enough to fold the upper handle over the lower handle, and it was quiet.

What bothered me most was the need to shake and hold the ejector fin over the weed bag. It was also complicated to hang the grass bag on the back of the lawnmower. Since the grass bag needs to be installed to use the mower and fills up quickly, so it must be emptied and replaced frequently, this quickly became a real nuisance. Some technical adjustments in plastic molding and possibly additional quality control could easily solve this problem.

Final Verdict:

The Sun Joe iON16LM is a great little lawnmower. Its compact design, ease of use and maneuverability make it an excellent choice for small lawns. If you have a medium-sized lawn or often let the grass grow too long, consider another option. If you choose the iON, this little guy will surely provide years of quality service.
